I had Ubuntu, but it kept freezing my computer. So, I just installed Xubuntu using Wubi. What can I do to customize it? I'm not sure if Compiz works with my system, since I was having problems with Compiz while in Ubuntu. What are ways to customize Xubuntu without using Compiz?

Xfce is very customizable. Mess around with your panels (or remove them). Change the window manager settings. Add keyboard shortcuts. Try new themes.

All that can be done from Xfce's settings manager. Hit Alt-F2 (or open a terminal) and enter "xfce-setting-show" without the quotes.

You can use adesklets and gdesklets for the flashy stuff as well.

Check out this guide. Its a good primer on customizing xfce. You may not want to vista out your desktop, but the process is the same for making other (better?) asthetic choices!
