Hi, I am new to linux and just installed hardy and i noticed the resolution is 640 x 480 so I went into screen resolution in preferences and I selected my preffered screen resolution and clicked apply but nothing happened, and most of the windows are too big in this resolution so I am not able to click the apply button or ok in some windows. how can I fix this?

thanks in advance

What kind of video card do you have? You probably need to install a proprietary video card.
In Linux, if you hold the Alt key then you can hold the left mouse button anywhere on a window and drag it around. This way you can get to the apply button.
