I need to install VLC again and so I opened up the Add remove program but a little window pops up and says this:

Failed to check for installed and available applications

This is a major failure of your software management system. Please check for broken packages with synaptic, check the file permissions and correctness of the file '/etc/apt/sources.list' and reload the software information with: 'sudo apt-get update' and 'sudo apt-get install -f'.

I don't know how to correct the sources.list file but I know how to edit stuff, i just don't know how it's "supposed" to be.

also what is kio-unmountsomethingsomething? is this related at all?

when i typed some stuff to get an update in the terminal, this is what i got:

chitra@chitra-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install -f

After i did that, this little notification came up saying some application crashed and it said this kiounmountwrapper thing failed to install or upgrade.

thanks for the fast reply though, hahah..

I need to install VLC again and so I opened up the Add remove program but a little window pops up and says this:

[big snip]

Not sure what's going on, or how to fix it..

You seem to be going along the right lines
however I note that the final command that you used was remove and not autoremove as suggested halfway down your quoted code list?

it is possible that you have found a little bug......
It looks similar to

[Bug 250086] [NEW] Could not completly remove "kio-umountwrapper" package

i've also tried autoremove, here:

chitra@chitra-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get autoremove

A bug is a flaw in the way the software was written.

Not sure if it would help but you could try "sudo apt-get purge kio-umountwrapper"

Please post the contents of /etc/apt/sources.list

gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Also you could try to first clean the APT cache before fixing packages,

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -f

Have you tried fixing broken packages in synaptic? System -> Admin -> Synaptic, then Edit -> Fix Broken Packages. Usually helps when i get similar messages

As for that, nothing seems to happen when i do sudo apt-get clean(but maybe that's supposed to happen).

When i do sudo apt-get update, there are no error messages but it says it fetched 3 B in 3 secs.. i dunno i get a weird feeling about it.

I HAD EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM BEFORE!

ok do this:

sudo apt-get install kio-umountwrapperwhen it is installed you won't notice it is there...the same thing will happen again if you try to uninstall it anyway. (it is like that for me)
you may find one more package with problems install that one to (you wont notice it's there). if you have any problems now please post the output....
