I've read people using it but what does the app steam actually do?

Well seeing as you need it to play some of the best games ever designed I'd have thought that was pretty damn useful.

Also works as a messenger programme, but that's about all.

I thought the Friends network didn't work through Wine... Or has there been an update to that? Last time I checked, I could send messages but not receive them from people on my friends list.

But yeah, if you want to play HL2, Portal, CS:S, CS, DoD, TF2, and a whole bunch of other great games, you need Steam. Just going to go play some Day of Defeat: Source myself actually. ;)

Yeah on WINE the Friends support is pretty tempremental, but on Windows it works fine. If they release Steam for Linux it'll be a godsend. Shame they are working on Valve time.
