Ok,
I've been told that running games under WINE (WoW specifically) would make the playing experience better? Now I'm hearing worse?! Who do I believe?!?!

As with most things in the real world, blanket statements of any kind tend to be false.
Some people, with some hardware (in particular, nVidia graphics cards), find that Wine provides better framerates and performance than Windows-native does.
Others, with some other hardware (ATI cards when using Source engine games, sometimes Intel cards with other games), find that Wine can't match Windows-native performance.
This is game-dependant, card-dependant, and, in some cases, dependant on other properties of your system.

A newbie's insight on the matter:
I think that it depends not just on the card type (nVidia vs ATI) but also what particular card model it is. nVidia has been a bit quicker to release drivers for Linux as compared to ATI which could indeed hold an affect on how peoples' gameplay performance goes. This is not to say ATI users are out of luck.
In a household of 2 WoW gamers with 2 computers, one ATI and one nVidia, the ATI outperforms the nVidia in terms of fps and graphical settings. My computer, the nVidia, has a slower processor (Pentium 4 2.8gig VS Pentium 4 3gig) and so I average about 15fps tops when outdoors. Inside, I get 30+ fps. However, the ATI card has a problem with the minimap turning white when indoors or in instances - this is a but ATI is supposedly aware of.
In the end, the best way for you to find an answer to your question is to try and install WoW for yourself and view the results directly. It will probably require tweaking - most WoW installs do - but there are some very helpful guides to get the job done.
