Ok, this is my first anything Linux related even being on my machine let alone near it. I have used Red Hat Enterprise before at college for various things, and Linux had always been a pain with stuff not working all the time.

Then I saw some Beryl videos on youtube, and I decided to virturalize it. That was this afternoon.

Hours and hours later of trying to "install" beryl (which proved unsuccessful), I realized that Ubuntu had stuff already installed for cool desktop diversions and so I sought out to get it working. But, I had a problem, it wouldn't detect my graphics card. I attempted to install my drivers for it, but I needed to be logged in as root, so, I went onward to figure out how to login as root, and guess what? I wouldn't accept my account information. And, believe it or not, when I rebooted the OS, it wouldn't allow me log back in again. That was my 3rd install of the Ubuntu that afternoon as the others cracked up.

Now, at this point, my views of Linux are very low. This is not a hater thead at all for against Linux in any way at all so please don't get the impression from it. I am coming to give it one last shot because my limited knowledge of the environment is painfully small.

This is what I want to do: Install Ubuntu with working Beryl (or whatever the other merged name they have now) for desktop testing and otherwise experimentation.

My system:
Vista Ultimate 64bit
Intel QX6700 Quad Core
ASUS Striker Extreme
eVGA GeForce 8800 GTX Superclocked
4GB DDR2 800mhz RAM
2TB HDD space

VMWare Workstation (latest version, forgot the numbers off hand).

What can I do to achieve this? I really love this video on youtube (http://youtube.com/watch?v=nrWXU1GNuHI) with the ubuntu OS being run in VM Workstation with Beryl and other stuff, but I cannot even get that far.

If any of you Linux guys can help a first time "owner" of Linux, I'd really appreciate it. :)
