You can obtain CentOS for free, it is the exact same thing re branded.

Now I could be wrong but I think you can download RHEL for free BUT you won't get Redhat's official support unless you pay for it.

You can only d/l the source code (as CentOS does plus changes all branding) and compile/install yourself. Binaries require you to sign for yearly (per CPU) support/maintenance agreement. Hmmm, if you could get the binaries for free, I guess that put CentOS out, eh???

The Redhat sources are a public link:

ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/enterprise/5Client/en/os/SRPMS

ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/enterprise/5Server/en/os/SRPMS

This is what CentOS uses to create their distro.

As for the redhat enterprise isos, you have to get a redhat login to download those. After installing Redhat Enterprise, if you don't have an activation code, you cannot install or update software. So a redhat iso is not worth much unless you have an actual subscription.

I should also mention that Eric Sandeen, a Red Hat employee (working on file systems) uses CentOS on his own server at http://www.sandeen.net

There isn't much worth mentioning in Red Hat that isn't also in CentOS.

Probably because he doesn't get employee discounts through RHN... LOL!
