View Full Version : [ubuntu] The Fastest 64-bit browser

We've all read comments about which browser is the "fastest" and it's usually a toss-up between Firefox (2 or 3) and Opera (9.2 or 9.5) on 64-bit Linux platforms. I don't know how IE on 64-bit Windows runs as compared to IE on 32-bit Windows.
Well, I would like to add a third contender to this "fastest browser" competition. That contender is: Epiphany.
Epiphany is SCREAMING fast on Ubuntu 64-bit and I do mean SCREAAAAAAMING fast!!!! I thought Firefox 3.0.1 was fast. I thought Opera 9.51 was fast. Epiphany seems to beat both of them but I haven't done any "serious" performance testing.
Have any of you also found Epiphany to be fast on 64-bit Ubuntu or am I just seeing things? :D
Peace...

I use arch x86_64 with epiphany+webkit and it is quite fast. It also has a much smaller memory footprint which, for me, doesn't matter but feels nice.

How does epiphany stack up feature wise? Does it render pages as accurately as the others?
Is it possible to have mouse gestures?
I don't use a lot of plugins for firefox but are there many available for epiphany?

How does epiphany stack up feature wise? You can see the list of features here (http://www.gnome.org/projects/epiphany/).
Does it render pages as accurately as the others?Yep. The version that comes with GNOME (2.22) uses Gecko 1.9 as its rendering engine. It should render pages similar to Firefox.
Is it possible to have mouse gestures?Yep (http://www.gnome.org/projects/epiphany/extensions.html).
I don't use a lot of plugins for firefox but are there many available for epiphany? Not as many as for Firefox but there are some (http://www.gnome.org/projects/epiphany/extensions.html).

Archlinux loves me like that. For Ubuntu you would have to compile webkit-nightly and epiphany-webkit, uninstalling normal epiphany of course.

No, I have them both installed and I can run both at the same time.
