I'm now almost sick -- GNOME won't load correctly because "Power manger" or something couldn't load -- It's now on a Windows 95ish looking interface.
So close to switching back to windows :-)
Any help please

Hi,
I seem to be experiencing similar problems to those mentioned. I do not wish to return to windows, but need simple, basic guidelines to help solve this, so that I can re-access my laptop.
Please read the information I emailed to gconf-list@gnome.org below;
Yesterday, when I went to shutdown my laptop, which is running Ubuntu 8.10, it seemed to freeze, so I forced it to turn off by holding down the power button. Later that day, when I tried to turn the laptop on, it logs on, takes me to login and password page, but then goes to a blank screen, with the following messages;
An error occured while loading or saving configuration information for evolution-alarm-notify. Some of your configuration settings may not work properly.
An error occured while loading or saving configuration information for update-notifier. Some of your configuration settings may not work properly.
The details for both these messages are;
Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://www.gnome.org/projects/gconf/ (mhtml:{5EECB62B-8D38-4A7E-A2DC-5052A4FA2CAD}mid://00000265/!x-usc:http://www.gnome.org/projects/gconf/) for information. (Details -1 : Could not send message to gconf daemon: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus))
There was also a message in the bottom right corner of the same screen;
Install problem!
The Configuration defaults for GNOME Power Manager have not been installed correctly. Please contact your computer administrator.
I have been to the suggested website, which is why I am sending you this email. I do not have any technical knowledge of computers, and could not figure out how to get all the information you requested, such as which version of GConf I have installed, Output of ps jaxwww / grep gconf, Output of gconf-sanity-check-1 or gconf-sanity-check-2, and what appears in user.*syslog.
I have tried to find out this information, but I do not know how to, and need very simple instructions to help me fix this problem.
I do hope you can be of assistance in this matter. I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
Richard O'Connor
