Hello all, I have a Core 2 Duo laptop running Ubunut Hardy 64 bit. It runs very well. Would the laptop benefit from upgrading the RAM to 4GB from the 2GB it has?

I know that 64 bit can use that much RAM,

I can get 4GB (2 x 2GB) RAM off Newegg for $80 shipped and yes my laptop supports 4GB RAM.

Anybody else did this and got a performance increase?

Let me know what you think.

Thanks.

The very cheap price for the ram makes this an interesting question. I guess it all depends on what you are using the laptop for. If its just for surfing, emails, and word processing. No it probably wont give you to much of a boost. But if you are doing 3d modeling, video editing, or some other resource hungry activity it may be worth it.

I don't think it is.

Keep an eye on your RAM usage, and see what it peaks at. I have 2GB and I rarely use 750Mb, even if I have compiz enabled

heh I got 8 gigs on my desktop and its never enough.
anyways main question has already been asked: What do you use your laptop for ??

EDIT: I wouldnt think about it for that kinda money

Up to 4Gb memory you can run 32bit Ubuntu, but memory recognized by Ubuntu will be like 3.2gb. 4Gb-8Gb memory can be used only by 64bit Ubuntu. Don't buy any Corsair memory. It is ridden with errors like Switz cheese with holes. Get yourself a Kingston memory, as it has very few errors. More memory is always giving performance increases. Memory errors can give you drop in performance or even crash your computer. Always check your memory chips with memtest+. Just don't keep swap file bigger then 1Gb and you should fly ;)

Check your system monitor. I only have a Gig and rarely use all of it. Unless your running virtual machines or something, that extra RAM won't make it faster. Regular web browsing, email, music, video, and compiz,(all at the same time) shouldn't use more than a gig. In my opinion, no matter how cheap the RAM is, it's a waste if you don't use it.
