I have been installing gnome (using kde4.1 right now) to give it a shot again. So my HDD has been going on constantly for the past half hour.
I've also been browsing and doing a few other things at the same time.
Somehow, SUSE has kept my Laptop so cool, even with the fan hardly blowing any air. I am so impressed and happy.
The heat issue was a problem with Hardy (not sure of other version since it's a new(ish) laptop.
OpenSUSE, I must say, you are impressing me more everyday I use you. First kde4.1 is running pretty stable for me so far, there are no sound issues with flash / other applications, the heat issue seems to be gone.
Flash doesn't crash my browser, flash also doesn't hover behind other flash objects etc..
I even tried the Alpha 11.1 breifly which brought even more support for my hardware (wifi light, and touchpad)
Don't get me wrong, Ubuntu is still on my favorites list (tie between debian and ubuntu for second) Also, I'm waiting for Intrepid to show some skin.
So, I'm just posting how happy I am my laptop isn't a furnace in this 90 degree weather. It also helps to not burn my hands/lap :lolflag:
:guitar: on OpenSUSE (& Ubuntu )
I'm just wondering if it is just the newest kernel, because fedora has shown the same level of success as OpenSUSE with my laptop and they are both fairly bleeding edge with kernels (fedora more so I think).
Ubuntu seems to be behind in with the kernel version, but I know why. That's why I'm excited for Intrepid!

I'm using the OpenSUSE 11.0 live CD at the moment, and I have to say I think it's fantastic. I'm really considering installing it, but I dunno. I just can't get my head around all these claims of Novell letting the side down with their Microsoft deals.
I've read the FAQ (http://en.opensuse.org/FAQ:Novell-MS) on their site, and while it seems fair enough to me, I just don't know enough about it all to be able to make a judgement. I believe in Linux and it's future, and I don't want to install and support something that's letting us down in the long run. But as I say, I'm not that versed in the truth behind this problem, so don't know what to do. I think it's important to be aware of these things in Linuxland though, since it's clear to me that MS would destroy it if they could.
What are peoples opinions here of all this? Do you still use SUSE in spite of their deals with MS? Sorry if this is the wrong place for this discussion.

If I understood the interop agreement right, the only packages covered for IP protection are those that make it into SLE, not openSUSE. So if I was a dev for SuSE I'd be calling the main office at Novell and asking them what's up...

I've been running OpenSUSE 11.0 for a few days, fantastic KDE 4.1 desktop. If only my ATI card worked properly...

Well, in spite of my misgivings from three weeks ago, I decided to take the plunge today and install Opensuse 11 over my current Mandriva. I really like Mandy, so it was a tough call but I fancied a change and the new Madriva is out soon enough anyway. So far, I have to say think it's really nice. I'm finding it quite easy to get around YasT, though it is a bit cryptic. It seems to have automatically installed my Nvidia driver too, which was a surprise.
So yeah, so far so good. Now if anyone can give me a genuine reason why I shouldn't be using this...

I'm tired of sound issues in Hardy. I'm switching to Suse 11 permanently.
I loved 10.2 and 10.3. Both were near perfect. Now I want to see what Suse has done with the KDE 4 environment. I'm sure I'll be happy with it.

I'm taking a break from Ubuntu for a little while. So, today I downloaded openSUSE 11 64-bit and am VERY impressed that it found my internal wireless card. Ubuntu 8.04.1 64-bit wouldn't even let me install the 64-bit driver via Ndiswrapper, thats why I got a Belkin Wireless USB G+ external wireless card. I'm waiting for II to see if it will detect 64 bit wireless right out of the box :-)

Well, I was back on Mandriva a day later! KDE4 is just too buggy to be able to use everyday, and it made OpenSuse feel a little unfinished for me. I had icons disappearing, the application launcher also went, and OOo made the screen completely glitch out. By contrast, Mandriva is utterly polished and elegant. I'm sorry I doubted it! Still, it was worth a shot, and I'll be curious to see how it improves as KDE4 progresses.

Installed Suse a few weeks ago with KDE4.1. Played with it for a while, tried to change settings - it kicked me into an infinite relogin loop. Glossy as it may be, but such serious bugs aren't for me.

KDE 4.1 still isn't ready for prime time yet. But openSUSE11 with 3.59 or Gnome is pretty darn good.
