lag when I try to download

When I try to download something through firefox, or even any program like kTorrent, other web program, there is a serious lag occuring. while I am downloading something, i can't even move my mouse properly. When the system starts downloading, i guess it uses all the CPU resources thats why i can't do anything.

I use GNOM but the same thing happens when I change to KDE

What is your computer's specs? What kind of internet connection do you have? What edition of *buntu are you using?

Pentium M 1.4 GHz
2g RAM

and the latest ubuntu version 8.04 i think

but i don't think the computer spec and internet speed are the matter as when I install this, it was perfectly okay at first time, but some days later this problem has been occuring.

Umm ... Sorry if I just bring some dead threads back up again but I have the same problem but I have Ubuntu 10.10 and an eMachines E525 .

Ok ... I just used the 200-Line-Script-Kernel-Patch-That-Does-Wonders ( Alternative Version ) and am using it . It is better but not fully away . At least I can download 4 files at one time ... But it still lags like hell . I think it is something like " Download Boost " used from left CPU % ... It downloads but to write it just uses an BOOST ( theory ) . How to shut this " boost " down ?

Ok ... I just did another download and watched at the CPU state ... It just got up like a SHOOT of an PISTOL !!! From 10~20% up to OVAH 100% !!! How to shut this boost down ?

Just became worse ! I CAN NOT EVEN PLAY MUSIC WHILE DOWNLOADING ! IT IS MUTED !!! Can someone really help me at least today ? Tomorrow is 2011 ... I do not want to wait sooo long ! PLEASE !!!
