Just try them both and see which one appeals to you more. Since you are fresh into Linux, you don't have a choice yet between Apt-get, or Yum, or any other package management out there, so it's good to try everything and pick based on your comfort level.

I ran Fedora for a year or so, and I definitely prefer Ubuntu. SuSE and Fedora didn't like my graphics card very much, and ATI stopped supporting it before they decided to make GOOD drivers. Ubuntu likes my graphics card enough to enable Compiz Fusion by default without using non-free drivers. I also hated how Fedora didn't separate KDE programs. I had to download the entire KInternet package just to use KPPP and KGet (this was at least 30 MB and I have dialup). For Ubuntu, they are two separate packages.

Ubuntu by far, getting media and stuff is far easier in Ubuntu and apt is far superior to YUM.
Yum really has crappy front ends, and its terrible at resolving itself.

I've recently tried f9 and found it to be pretty nice, but rpm and my familiarity with Debian and Ubuntu spelled the doom of fedora on my system. I just don't like rpm in general and yum in specific...

Well RPM if used right is pretty fair, mandriva has made rpm management brainlessly easy.

If yum wasn't so bad, fedora would be a viable option in my eyes. It is definitely getting better in my opinion.

My beef with Mandriva is the incessant ads that start before you even get the os completely installed. That and when I tried to change from kde to gnome it blew up... not a happy occasion!

YUM was for sure my least favorite part of Fedora. At one point, I guess the developers decided resume support wasn't necessary, and with 21k dialup this isn't fun. It often restarted downloads when they were almost done, I think because of a server timeout. There got to be a point where I made an HTML list of all my updates (except the really small ones), and then I downloaded them when I had access to a high speed connection. The headers were also gigantic, and it often randomly decided to re-download them when I already had the latest version, and without resume support this was a total pain in the neck! I LOVE SYNAPTIC!
