problem connecting through ethernet

Hey guys, this is pretty radical. i was having trouble connecting to my families internet via ethernet cable. i would plug it in, and it would give the standard ok on the icon, and yet, i cannot get the internet to work. I have plugged in many an ethernet cable and ran the internet no problem but it's only now.

i contacted my ISP and they literally told me there was nothing i could do because (in there words exactly) Do not have experience using 'Linux' hahahaha. whatever. screw'em.

anyhow. does any one have ideas?
