I just got Xubuntu installed on my computer, and everything is working great :). About updating... if I were using a different distro, for example one I made myself, would the kernel and other components automatically update, or would I have to do it manually?

I've never done it but unless you wrote into the script to do updates I would guess that you would have to manually update the kernel and all other parts yourself

No it would not update automatically.

With your own distro you'd have to manually make it update automatically :)

If your custom distribution:

A) Uses Apt/Yum/Yast/Portage/any other package manager.
B) Has the correct source list files in place for those managers to work.
C) The kernel is include in at least one of those repositories.

Then you'll get automatic kernel upgrades.

...Whether or not they will work, is a completely different matter.

NO!

But you can modify your Ubuntu until the sun don't shine and it'll still get whatever updates you say it can thru Software Sources!
