So I am new to this Linux thing and was looking for some help.

I recently was looking around on the internet and found this article someone over at bit-tech.net wrote about how to build your own server (http://www.bit-tech.net/bits/2007/06/05/build_your_own_server/1). I thought that looked pretty cool especially since I had an older machine sitting around that I was no longer using and am interested in trying out new stuff. I thought it would be a fun little project. So I started going on it by installing the newest Hardy Heron from xUbuntu and followed the directions and everything and got to the point where I have installed Samba and proftpd. Now after doing those to things I am supposed to see if it worked and if I can contact the server from a different computer. I have no idea how to do that since the example is on a windows computer and I have an Intel iMac and a Intel Macbook. I recently made the switch to macs about five months ago and am still learning some of the more advanced workings with that but have a fairly decent understanding. So my question is if someone knows how to use Linux to setup a server that I can use on my home network with Macs or if they can lead me in the right direction with the next step in the instructions I was following. I would really appreciate it. And I don't know if this has already been posted as a thread and if it was I apologize for reposting. A little nudge in the right direction would be much appreciated.

Thanks

For a pure server system, you're better off installing Ubuntu Server edition. A GUI is a bit pointless on a server.

On the other hand, I set up Apache w/eyeOS on my Xubuntu box and it works great.

To test any server, go to http OR ftp://*yourip*/
