hello all,

firstly i would like to thank the forum and all those in it for there assistance with my OS,things have been running smoothly so far.

i recently have attempted to network my Ubuntu OS to communicate with windows systems, I downloaded the samba shares program, but had difficulty trying to get it to work.

also when I initiate a manual configuration i some how disable my internet in firefox, it begins to look for the local network instead of my telstra bigpond internet service.

Could you post your /etc/samba/smb.conf file, so that we can help you solve this problem.

I have followed Hyper_CH instructions although I do not use a server as such, I have Ubuntu hardy 64 bit which is connected to a router which I use as a hub because I do not have the internet connected via the device, I use a wireless modem to connect to the internet.

I am trying to connect to my XP notebook, however when I activate my network through CAT 5 medium I seem to be unable to surf the net as it tries to connect to my router instead.

as always any help is much appreciated.

I have finally gotten my network up and running between windows and Ubuntu, however I have two problems:

1> Ubuntu is very slow in boot up and Log in after i assign a network IP address.

2> I can no longer gain access to the Internet while my local network is running

Any help would be much appreciated.

sorry to bring it up again but does any one know how to speed up my network, for some reason every thing slows down: applications, boot up, log in you name it when i connect my network my computer it runs slower than a horse with one leg.

I have tried almost every thing search the entire Internet trying to find out why my ubuntu hardy slows down when i run the network on it, i cant find a solution to this problem.

any help please

not sure what u were trying to do... but are you booting onto a network?

also...internet is slow probably because of ICS?.......also, are you running in Full Duplex mode...or have full duplex hardware?.........dhcp server active?.....firewall?.......

are you trying to mount them during boot up?

maybe it goes slow because in order to mount them you need authentication..

but its still booting so it wont ask for it, it only continues to boot when it time's out..

if you have 2 interfaces up, and you only want local access on one interface and the other is internet.. then you might have to setup a routing table of some sort as i reckon you might be losing packets because it doesnt know where to send the packets to..

but, im unsure with any of this.. so i hope someone can confirm what i just said.. lol

louistan3, I think you might be onto something there i never thought of, I also hope some one on the forum can help. lol but do you know how to set this routing table?.

I finally got my network to work, now I can share my internet and files over the network, just in case any one asks, I got a router to do my dirty work, ha, it's the easy things in life that makes it the best.

I know, I know, I cheated, I just gave up trying to find a solution, my system was so slow the conventional way of setting up a network that it drove me mad.

but thank you to all those who helped, really appreciate it, Viva La Ubuntu.
