I'm running 8.04 and have been struggling, for a long time, trying to get wireless to work. I now realize I have a more basic problem. Even though I have an Ethernet cable plugged in and it works fine, Ubuntu's Network Settings is completely dim ... it seems to think the connections don't exist. Both of my two Ethernet cards show up properly when I run ifconfig.

When I first up graded to 8.04, Network Settings was OK.

That was it! So that's what it does! Many thanks from Andy Pickens, in San Antonio, Texas. I've been messing with this thing for a couple of months, trying to substitute determination for skill and know how.
