I just noticed this problem. When I hit the "power off icon" in the upper right corner my PC freezes, not allwoing me to do anything. I must have borked something.

Any ideas? Everything works fine untill I try to shutdown.

but if you leave it will it shut down ?
Or will it remain there.

If it remains there
try hitting this compination of keys
ctrl+Print Screen < have this presseed and press the following keys
R - S - E - I - U - B

That will restart you, just to see if the machine actually froze up.

What about re-installing the GNOME applets:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall gnome-applets

No nothing happens if I just let it sit. I don't get the option menu. I click the icon and it freezes.

I will give re-installing the gnome applet a try.

That will restart you, just to see if the machine actually froze up.I thought it was Alt + Print Screen/SysRq and R E I S U B. That works for me. Next time I'll try your way. That's why I love GNU/Linux - so many ways of recovering from a system crash (as opposed to those "other" OS's with their hard reboots by holding the power button...but I digress)...
