For once, this isn't about not being able to play DVDs on my penguin. Rather it's about which discs will play more or less glitch-free.
Like almost everyone else who's had DVD playback issues and have posted here, I found myself scratching my head whenever Xine or Totem wouldn't behave. I was finally able to get things working, more or less, with VLC as ny default player.
Which leads to the "quirk."
If the DVD authoring process for the disc was kept "basic" -- no fancy menus, everything kept in a precise order -- then it plays on my penguin without a complaint. If I choose to "Open Disc" and select "DVD" (as opposed to "DVD (Menus)"), no sweat. The disc will play any logo reel first, bypass the menu, and go straight into the feature. (I'm preparing a video project right now, which will eventually hit DVD, and I'm contemplating the idea of ditching the menus altogether and simply providing a chapter listing for the disc.)
So I suppose DVDs with menus are the big crux here. Not that it matters too much in my case, but it might amuse a few of you in the forums...;)
