.comments folders appearing with photos

Hi everyone,

I discovered by accident that when I download some of my photos (Cannon 400DS) a hidden folder is produced called .comments which contains xml files which when opened say something like:

"XML Parsing Error: not well-formed
Location: file:///home/charles/Pictures/2008/John%20&%20Elaine%27s/.comments/00001.jpg.xml
Line Number 1, Column 1:"

Can anyone tell me why this happens and what it means?

Woops, I misread your question. Probably just the metadata for the files. Things like make and model of camera, and the time the pictures were taken.
