Getting media to work

So i installed Hardy Heron 8.04 and followed the sticky on this forum on playing movies and streaming media. However, it is causing a huge headache. Sometimes the movies are slow and have no sound. I have to restart and then it might work. Other times, the media player opens and quickly closes. What did you guys do to enable streaming media and movies?

i go to synaptic and completely remove totem-mozilla and install mozilla-mplayer, vlc and amarok. but first i enable the Medibuntu (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu) repos. everything works great for me.

It seems strange that when I play a file it works and then a while later my computer makes this strange sound like dun dun dun and then the media won't work. The file will open then close. What is this strange sound and how do I stop it.
