So I got a new Macbook Pro and when I started it up for the first time there was a window for registration where I entered my name, address, phone number, etc. I am very anal about people knowing my information, and does anyone know why they asked me for this info. Is it only for the address book in os x, or can they now track me down if I ever do anything "bad" with the laptop? Like is there a laptop serial number or something, thanks this is killing me.

This forum is a technical support forum for running linux on a Mac. You should try to keep OS X questions in the OSX forum:

That said, that is a registration. You "registered" your macbook pro. Just like you register many applicances or electronics. I am not sure about Apple, but such a thing is usually required for your warranty, etc. I would not worry about someone "tracking" you down. Yes, your laptop will have a serial number (accessible via software), but pretty much any laptop will have this now.

You seem quite paranoid. Just don't do anything "bad" and you have nothing to worry about. :)

I didn't even know that forum existed, I just saw Apple and went for it, I'm sorry. I am planning on installing Ubuntu. Thanks for the help though. When you say the serial is accessible via software, is that any software I can use to see it, or even change it? If not would you know where the serial is located inside the computer, I am guessing it is on one of the motherboard chips? And as for not being "bad", I can't, it's in my blood.:lolflag:

I am pretty sure that you can see it in System Profiler in OS X.

No, you cannot change it. That would kind of make it pointless would it not?

True, but I was thinking something more of someone hacking it so it could be changed, people are smart these days. Well some are.
