Hi all,

another quick question for you,

Is there something out there that can be used instead of a an exchange system, that is I to have the functionality listed below,

1)mail server
2)mail client(not to much of a problem but may need something specific)
3)public folders
4)public/private calendars
5)public/private contacts
6)mail groups

anything else you can think of that is useful that i have missed of the list.

thanks

I think zimbra can do all that. Some people like citadel. I don't. I've seen kolab mentioned before.

I'll second the Zimbra recommendation.

Maybe with Zimbra Network Edition. It isn't free.

Funambol also works quite happily with citadel.. And the entire package is open source and free. No enterprise or paid editions with citadel.

Definitely check out Citadel [http://www.citadel.org] for this purpose -- it takes a refreshingly intuitive and user-focused approach to messaging and collaboration (read: it isn't just a clumsy clone of Exchange). Fully self-contained system, lightweight disk and memory footprint, ajax web UI provided by a built-in http server, and *easy* to install.

Ya know, I don't know what you have against Zimbra, but it's annoying. You obviously have never used it.

Both Zimbra and Citadel are good solutions for what the OP wants to do. I'm not trashing Citadel, it's a good product, just different than Citadel in it's approach. I don't see the necessity of digging up a 2 week old post just to trash a product you obviously don't know anything about.

Actually I keep one running just to see what's up. It's decent software, but I take exception to the way they misrepresent themselves as an open source company, and the astroturfing their PR department does.

Richard Stallman warns against aligning with wolves-in-sheeps-clothing for a very good reason.

I use Citadel. I have to use zimbra for my @embarqmail.com account and I hate it. Citadel and zimbra are the ones that are best looking web mail interface, and free out of all the mail servers I compared on Wiki www.wikipedia.org.

Obviously everyone will have their opinions. Choice is usually good. I think it's fine to point out what you like and don't like about a particular package, but to say the Zimbra package is not OSS when it clearly is, is not being honest. I think he's complaining because he doesn't know how to enable some of the features but that isn't Zimbra's fault is it? You can't make an informed decision unless you actually have used the package and understand it. That's exactly why I have just set up citadel in a VM to evaluate once again since people seem to be so adamant about how great it is. I'm gonna go through it one more time just to be sure, maybe there is something I am missing.

I take that back. I don't hate Zimbra I just don't use it or like it. But like you said we are free to express our options on different products.
