Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post this in. Please let me know if it's not.

Just so you know i'm fairly computer illiterate.

I just got a Samsung 244t 24-inch monitor that is supposed to run at 1920x1200. I installed the driver for it, and I updated the driver for my graphics card (which is probably from like 2005). It is Intel 8xxxxx or something similar.

The highest resolution it will let me pick in the 'settings' section is 1600x1200.

Is this most likely due to my graphics card, my inability to find the correct drivers, or something else I have no idea about.

Thank you for any help you can give.

Hi and welcome, you may try and use the alt, F2 keys and enter the command gksu displayconfig-gtk there you can set up your resolution.

I should have mentioned that I'm using Windows XP?

Is this a strictly linux forum? I just googled a couple keywords about my query and I ended up here.

Well, it is ubuntu forums, however it would of been sort of helpful if you stated that you were using Windows XP, someone might be able to still help you.

Do you know which video card you have? It might be limited to the lower resolutions. Also, try changing the refresh rate to be lower. Usually the higher the refresh rate the lower the resolution, and vice versa.

Cross reference whatever you find out here w/ Intel's website using your graphics card as a reference. Click on support & then documentation to find specs... If the card is from 2005 then the possibility of displaying greater resolution than what it's already telling you is limited...

That Intel card might not work with such a high resolution. Actually, it probably doesnt.

However, you can get yourself a new video card for not much more money.

Your computer likely has PCI, and might have PCI-E. Could you tell us what you have? If you don't know, the computer model would be just as good.
