View Full Version : e-Sword, Dan's gui controls, & hardy upgrade question

This may be more of a Ubuntu beginner question, but I figured you guys could help me. I've been searching the forums for an answer to my question, but can't seem to find what I'm looking for.

I'm not a CE user, but I installed Dansguardian along with the GUI parental control, and e-Sword to 7.04, thanks to the Popular Packages feature at the CE website. Now I want to upgrade to 7.10 to 8.04, and am concerned about what will happen to these programs. I ask because when I upgraded from 6.04, I lost Nvu because it was no longer supported. My question is, will e-Sword, Dansguardian, and the GUI parental control survive the upgrades? Or will I have to reinstall everything all over again. (I've procrastinated on this series of upgrades because I couldn't find the answer to this and I'm not familiar with manually installing anything!)

For e-sword, it might not survive upgrade. But you could reinstall e-sword using below easy to follow instruction, practically on any distro running wine:

Eutaw and David, thank you for taking the time to reply. David, thank you for the link. I reckon that ultimately, the only way I'm going to find the answer to my question is to go ahead, do it, and see what happens! :)

UPDATE - I have finally made successful upgrades from 7.04 to 7.10 and now to 8.04 (please be sure to research potential upgrade problems to 8.04, because I had some).

e-Sword survived both upgrades with no problem. I haven't tried to use the module manager since then, but I have everything as I want it at present.

Dansguardian however is the problem. It was disabled after the upgrade to 7.10, and generated the only error message upgrading to Hardy. It was part of the upgrade, but it isn't working. I still have the GUI parental control panel, which says dansguardian is enabled, but it's not.

I'm guess that I need to remove and reinstall the dansguardian package, and then get the new gui panel for Ubuntu 8.04.
