Is there a website authoring tool / html editor available for Ubuntu (along the lines of MS's FrontPage or Dreamweaver)?

Check out Nvu, which is quite good. Plus Dreamweaver is said to run via Wine / Crossover.

NVU is very nice IF you don't plan to do very much with php. It seems to try to check the files before uploading them, and so if your php include statement is where it gets it's <body> tag (for example), it'll complain.
If you're doing mostly straight HTML, it's great though. I made/am making this site with it. http://stuporglue.org.
One other downside is that it only supports ftp transfers. If your site requires sftp to upload, you'll need to save the files locally (not a big deal) and use another client.
EDIT: Another decent GUI editor is Quanta. I've used it in the past. It's a bit more complex, but is pretty nice. Bluefish is nice for text based editing.

I dont like NVU that much when using it's WYSIWYG editor, the tags it uses is alittle bit messy and old IMO. (<small><small>FONT LOL</small></small>). If you have $$$ you can buy Crossover Office 5, Dreamweavers MX works, (not MX 2004

Would you guys recommend using NVU for a photo gallery type site? I used frontpage which was great till I locked myself out doh. I've changed host server to linux... http://www.streamlinenet.co.uk/wvl.php don't know why... but was hoping to do something cool like streaming my garden.
Best Wishes
