Use K9Copy (http://k9copy.sourceforge.net/) you can install it from Synaptic or with the command...

sudo apt-get install k9copy

Here is a guide on how to use K9Copy. (http://www.dvd-guides.com/content/view/213/59/)

Dittos from me on the suggestion from that old Irish rebel, Fenian, to use K9Copy. DeVeDe is a terrific program but it goes the other way, it will make a DVD ISO or a set of VOB files from an AVI source.

K9Copy is just terrific for this.
