I've had trouble finding a definitive answer to this one.

I installed mythtv mainly for sports. What I would like is to leave the window as a portion of my desktop and watch it while I do other things. Then, maximize when something exciting occurs.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried to select "open mythtv in a window"? This may give you a re-sizable window on your desktop.

Yes I did. The window is not maximizable, nor is it resizeable.

I think in general that mythtv only works at the startup resolution. For one thing all theme files are resized to the working resolution and cached (you see this on startup). I don't think on the fly resizing is supported.

You could try something like the totem plugin, or streaming via mythweb if you want resizable.

My understanding is that its not resizable live because the theme for the OSD is cached too

I know I'm probably being optimistic but I was hoping that compiz would help me here.

Any ideas?

I have been looking for the same thing, and may have found the answer. Try the compiz-fusion shelf plugin. It scales a window down so you can monitor it. By default, you use alt+win+mouse wheel to resize a window. Of course, the mythtv window still doesn't have a border or title bar when you resize it, but you can drag it around with alt+left mouse button.
