Can you connect the HDD to another computer?
Because then you can boot the CD on it and install it to the preferred HDD.

I downloaded it from the Linux site as a bootable cd image. it should boot, but says "missing operating system".

simple. that means you are not booting to the cd. make sure your bios is set to boot from cd first. if your bios is set, then you did not burn the cd correctly. there is no need for floppies these days.

Which OS did you burn the ISO with, and what program?

In the past, I've had issues with certain burning applications on Windows. I find IMGBURN does the best job.

If you did it from a Linux distro, most likely the cd burned correctly (I've never had an issue).

If it still doesn't work, then your bios settings are not set correctly as previously mentioned.
