Are there different file managers? I hate the windblows look alike file manager that comes by default.

Okay you're right.
Simplistic, Column view prefered, not double paned column (that makes no sense to me), Something along the lines of Finder but without all the flashiness that coverflow provides, and ftp capabilities.
When I say Column view I mean like the finder style and not the windows style. I just prefer it.
Well now I'm to specific.

it appears that konqueror has something similar, but there are a lot of libraries to go along with that.

there is an ubuntu brainstorm to get something similar to column view into gnome:

Well thats good to know. That would be pretty cool if they get that going. I use a mac at work and find the column view the easiest thing to use because it forces me to remember (easily remember) where everything is.
As far as the bsc it is two column and to me that says ftp. Its good for moving around files I guess but (and I'd have to try it first) I don't think thats what I'm looking for.
For now I think Thunar will get it because it is simplistic. I'll have to wait until this gnome brainstorm puts out column view.
Thought I'd add in an url that could help someone with same problems as me. When you decide what you wanna change your default file manager to this site makes it easy. http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/nonautilusplease

I've done my own search for a file manager with columns. There are two I've found. The first is actually based on the precursor to OSX's Finder. It's called GWorkspace. I don't recommend it, because you have to install the entire Gnustep mess to get it, and it uses the NeXT-style menus, and is not at all compatible with other desktop environments.
The other is Dolphin for KDE4. It is very close to Apple's column-view in the Finder. However, it's KDE4-based, and will load tons of extras, and isn't GTK-based. But it will give you what you want. You could try KDE4 too. ;-)

well yeah. That brings up a whole other question about how can I add KDE on top of my gnome?

apt should get all the required libraries for any package you install.

Yeah it did. KDE is pretty cool but it's almost too loaded down with stuff. Not as easy to navigate and its repetitive.
I appreciate everyones help and interest. I've only tried the forums a few times and it really has helped.
Now if I could only replace dreamweaver I'd be set.
