I know this forum is for Ubuntu but I was hoping someone could steer me to a place where I could get help with getting rid of Vista and installing either W2K or XP on my wife's computer.

1 Click on the Report Button on your own post and asks the mods to move this thread to Other OS > Windows. You might get more responses.

2 Google for Windows forum and take your pick! Do you get a PC/Windows/Computer magazine ever? Some of these (in the UK at least) have their own forums.

Be aware that if the laptop has been designed with only Vista in mind, you may have difficulties getting hold of all the XP/Win2K hardware drivers.

Check out that aspect before you format and re-install. Also, make sure that you have created the Vista recovery DVD before you blow it all away - you may just need it again one day.

If you are SURE that you want to get rid of Vista then you could use www.killdisk.com to WIPE the drive completely clean.

As already stated download all the XP drivers for your laptop, especially SATA drivers, if you have a SATA Hard Disk. Then, assuming you don't have an external Floppy Drive for the Laptop, you will have to slipstream the Drivers into XP CD. To slipstream the Drivers you can use nLite http://www.nliteos.com/
If you have a PATA Hard Drive you may not need to slipstream the Drivers as XP comes with most IDE Storage Controller Drivers.
Then you can just format the Drive through Windows Setup and install etc.

I would suggest you download Clonezilla http://www.clonezilla.org/ and image your Laptop Hard Drive before installing XP. Then you can restore the image later and go back to Vista, if you change your mind.

Hey, thanks to all!

I will use the eldergeek site (didn't know about it until now) That's what I am - well at least the elderly part.

I checked and most of the drivers all show to be the same one provided by MS.

I'll check for the others.

Clone or restore disk - yes I will.

Muchas gracias - again.
