I would recommend Nexuiz. Unzip it and play - no further installation needed. There's also a Loki-installer available, if you want that.
You could also try Enemy Territory, but unfortunaly this has no offline mode. It is installed with a Loki-installer.
Try Nexuiz, if you like Quake-style fast fragging or take ET if you like Counter Strike style fast dying.
There are also plenty others. If there only would be as many good games of other genres than FPS for linux...

There's plenty!
Here's some titles:
- There are native ports for the entire Quake and Doom series.
- http://liflg.org/ has a load of installers (both native and Wine) for plenty of games, ranging from old (Diablo 2) to quite recent (UT series).
- http://www.bzflag.org/ is a jumping tank game which is great fun. The controls are weird but once you get used to it, you have great gameplay. Think Heavy Metal meets MC Escher. :) The version from the repos is actually quite broken I read somewhere else on this forum. :(
- Already mentioned above: Enemy Territory (a mod for Return to Castle Wolfenstein) and True Combat: Elite (a mod for ET) are both very much fun to play. TCE can best be described as a well done CS clone. It is fast-paced, insta-die action. ET plays a bit like a cross between CS and BF1942 and is more arcade-ish.
Have fun.

I am playing Unreal Tournament and Quake III arena on windows currently. They are older (November 1999, Q3A was released 10 days after UT) but they are great. They both have native ports to Linux.

That's the problem with Linux, the only "Linux commercial games" are FPS.
I wish Grand Prix Legends, CMR Rally, RBR Rally, F1 Challenge, Panzer General Scorched 3D had a Linux native port.
I bought UT a few years ago ( because it was in the bargain bin and it's a good workbench to test my 3D drivers )
American Army ? lol
Why should I spend some money on violent games when here we have "Hockey Night in Canada" for free :)

Doesn't scorched 3d actually _have_ a linux port? look in the repositories, because it's there :) (sudo apt-get install scorched3d)

I downloaded Nexuiz, but I'm getting VERY poor performance. Its unplayable. Methinks my crappy integrated video won't hand;le it. :(
I have the INtel 82845G/GL [Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset...

Also check out the low performance tweaks on the Nexuiz forums, many effects can be turned off in the game and I've found it quite playable on suprisingly basic video cards.

Does anybody know of a good, free easy to set up FPS? I've been jonesin' for one for sometime. Doomsday. Check my sig, but you need a doom, heretic or hexen iwad (freedoom doesn't work). Also doesn't work for amd64, (also no powerpc packages yet)

You need cube. Runs on extremely pathetic hardware, no BS just pure FPS shooting fun. I prefer cube over any online FPS game there is, simply because there are no complications, no fancy button presses, no double jumps or anything of the sort. Its also incredibly easy to make your own maps for.

And if you like cube perhaps you would like to check out the current state of sauerbraten, successor to cube. Its still in development but now is a good time to learn the mapping side of it.

Heh. I feel your pain... Anyway, Cube (http://www.cubeengine.com/) is a great game that works on low-powered 3D cards (or in your case, low-powered mobo graphics chips) Netplay is great, but the AI for single-palyer and botmatches isn't very good... It is MUCH easier (and more fun) to create maps for this game than it is to create maps for more standard shooters, so you might even want to try maps out.

Legends (http://www.legendsthegame.net) is a great FPS that has binaries for Windows and Linux.
Of all the FPS's I've tried for Linux, its my favorite.
Legends for Linux can be downloaded here: http://www.legendsthegame.net/index.php?m=fileswap&view=58

I've noticed you've mentioned ETF and UT a few times, isn't it required that you own the commercial games in conjuction with the stuff you can download to get it running?

Netuiz is most tasty and excellent. I got radically plowed under in about as long as it took to say it...

I checked out Warsow, but I try to run it, and it exits out. Tried finding a starter guide, but couldn't find one.
Cube is pretty good. Now to create some maps.

just played a little warsow... had some trouble using the configurator in the game.. it crashed no matter what I did.
but the game was alright.. I just sucked... I know for sure I hit the other guy, but somehow I was always the one to die.. Guess warsow just isn't for me.
