I had a Hardy 8.04 32bit install (fresh) and it detected my ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 as my propriety driver. I decided before i did anything (installing the drivers) that id upgrade to ubuntu 8.10
I change the repositories according to this guide:http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Hardy [at the bottom]

everything went smoothly and i restarted and everything

after i was logged in i noticed that i didnt get prompted for my graphics card

so i check the Hardware Drivers section and it says that no propriety drivers are in use on my system!

can i just simply download the ATI drivers

Intrepid is for testing and not recommended for everyday system and you will encounter issues.
