those things are always scams anyway, to con people into thinking that they've got viruses to pay for their software or install their own virus, there's no way a webpage could scan your computer in the first place(not on a feaseable level anyway).

Linux has near 0 viruses, and I doubt there are even 100 viruses for linux, let alone 2,000. just ignore it and install an adblocking plugin like adblock plus for firefox.

Does Linux even have viruses? What would be the point, really? I mean, unless two super nerds were trying to screw up each other's computers for the lulz.

there are a few old viruses for linux which no-one ever got when the came out either(most sucessful of which was made to prove viruses can thrive), so yeah, there are viruses, but no-one ever get's them.

Linux has 30 known in-the-wild viruses as of now.

Just about evey one is ineffective due to both the security model of Linux and the fact that whatever they exploited has likely been fixed by now.

If you are using firefox then install the noscript extension from

http://noscript.net/

to stop such nonsense.

I'm running mint and have wine installed. I also have the AV 2009 exe sitting on my desktop. I ran across it today at work(Internet help desk and we run linux) and saved the file to my desk top and saved as an attachment in my email so i could try it out in wine. I just wonder if any one in this forum has tried this and if it is even worth trying.

P.S I'm new to the forum thing and if this should have been posted somewhere else I am sorry.

if it is even worth trying? for what? antivirus 2009 is not an antivirus it acts like one but in itself is a virus (it's just a scam) once installed you will not be able to remove it (windows computers), well if you are curious you can try it in wine, it won't do any harm to your linux computer and to get rid of it just delete the home wine folder

Hi,

It actually gathers ftp logins and infects websites. I had this problem on a few of my sites and this is the message my host sent me:

As far as our security analyst can tell, all of these hacks are being conducted via malware that has gained access to your ftp login information. You will need to follow the following steps to protect your domains/account in the future. Go to the following link and follow the removal instructions for the removal of this malware. You will need to do this on any computer that has accessed your site via ftp.
This rogue anti-virus software installs malware on your computer that then sends your sensitive data back to a source. This source then hacks your account and installs .htaccess files that redirect to other sites for the download of this same rogue anti-virus software. Information on how this virus originated on the web can be found at the following link: http://www.techpavan.com/2008/07/15/google-tips-red-alert-never-consider-them/.
As of today, many anti-virus websites have updated their lists and most are reporting they can remove the virus. However, there are also reports that show it doesn't get removed. Best solution at this time is to download one of the programs created specifically for "antivirus 2009" removal. One of such programs is available at:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/malware-removal/uninstall-antivirus-2009
Please also check following article if you have Mac:
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r21346127-Re-Rogue-AntiVirus-2009-on-a-MACBOOK
Once and only once you have checked your computer and/or removed this av2009.exe file, then you will need to change your ftp password information for all of your domains. You will also need to delete these htaccess files from all of your sites.

Hope this helps.
