I wonder how cold those rooms are... typical server room temperatures, around 16° to 20° C ... all those machines generate lots of heat, and there is extensive air conditioning to keep everything at the right temperature ... not too cold, not too hot. Also add to this that many parts of CERN are up to 100m underground, so proper air conditioning is a must anyway.

My Dinosaur was working fine until I did that... For some reason, the built-in fan on the graphics card (ATI All-in-wonder Radeon 8500dv 64MB) will not turn. Probably needs some WD-40...

Just in case anyone didn't get it, this is the original Russian Reversal:
"In America, you can always find a party. In Soviet Russia, the Party can always find YOU."
There's also the mockery Togolese reversal, where you simply scramble the sense out of the sentence.

AFAIK, Pluto has been re-classified and is no longer considered a planet.
See Wikipedia: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pluto) Originally classified as a planet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planet), Pluto is now considered the largest member[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pluto#cite_note-wiki-kbo-5) of a distinct region called the Kuiper belt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuiper_belt).

Meh, try a 300GB Holographic disc...
They're supposed to get as big as 3TB, but with the read/write speeds they're talking about (faster than SSDs), who cares about a "waste of space". Those things could eventually replace hard-drives! (If we ever got around to adapting the technology or -- Wait! No "hard-drives" at all! Just have 2 or more drives in your comp and live boot with all your data!)
Did anyone see PM's Mac vs. PC article? Who would buy a Gateway for $1800 anyway? The only thing the RAM (Mac: 1GB, PC: 3GB) would really affect is the stress-launch of Photoshop, which the Mac wasted the PC in anyway (Mac: ~28 sec, PC: ~48 sec). I'd still go with building my own PC, but for a laptop, I'd go MacBook Pro.
You know you're a geek when:
...you spent about 30 minutes writing a single post on this forums.
...you're building a fusion reactor to prove:
E=mcmaterial2 a.k.a. K(x)=K4(x)*K3(ϒ) where ϒ is a photon, K(σ)={length=0, width, volume, speed, mass, charge, "valence" and other electronic properties in atoms, spin, strangeness, charm, bottomness}, and cmaterial is the velocity of light in a material in which a matter-energy reaction takes place, thus giving a possible use of "dilithium" from Star Trek in a matter-antimatter reaction. If "dilithium" has properties that cause light to go faster than it does in a vacuum, exponentially so when stimulated by an electromagnetic field, then that would yield a greater energy output, thus opening the possibility for warp-speed travel. We still haven't found any material like that yet, but the vacuum in "velocity of light in a vacuum" is not a true vacuum, and scientists have gotten light to go faster with quantum tunneling.
P.S. Does this forum have any subscript and superscript commands?

Dead on.. I've gone through soo many things.. especially my once beloved iPod by trying to mess with the BIOS and other parts that aren't meant to be played with.. But where's the fun in following the rules..
It's all about pushing the limits, especially the crap Apple comes out with.
But thanks to my screw up.. I've finally cut off everything from Apple! \\:D/

You know you're a geek when your entire system, including, but not limited to, circuit boards and case, is custom-designed. Anyone like that here?
You know you're a geek when you'd rather get up an hour early to drink your coffee and work on your computer than sleep in for another hour.
You know you're a geek when you and your friends are doing a video project for science (Dinosaurs on a Plane), and you're doing it in Anim8or and X-Plane.
You know you're a geek when you sell your "soul" on ebay to buy computer parts and/or parts for a mini fusion reactor.:-\" "I have 'multiple personalities'. I keep my 'extra souls' in jars in my closet. Here, you can have one for $5,000."
You know you're a geek when for some reason, your speakers and all the music you play on them sound better with a flat graphic eq. setting. Dunno why, but they do...
You know you're a geek when you made a utopia on SimCity 4 without using cheats, but using your own cracks (in case anyone's wondering how, I made an invisible building in BAT, made a school, a hospital, a police dept., a fire dept., and a "purification plant" (super-park) out of it and props. I also made a landmark with 25,000 jobs that I can put in over and over, I put in a park with a monthly payment of -$1 billion/month for the first month, and went into the dat files to change the capacity of the different roads. I did, however use cheats in the beginning to get the Hydrogen Power Plant and the Large Water Pump.)

You hear your friend is doing this and instead camp online on WOW for the same amount of time in front of a random store. Then roleplay as your friend by for example telling anyone who passes by if they too are camping for the newest midnight release and try stopping them if they "cut in line".
(Sorry, I have never played WOW out of fear of getting too addicted to it, so I wouldn't know how far I could get with this joke.)

That's exactly what I do (thought it was a common practice among tech-people, not just geeky stuff).
I don't know what I would need to see the sticker for, but I would certainly like to remove the one saying "Designed for Windows XP. Vista Capable". I'd probably end covering it with a Linux-sticker because I don't want to harm my machine.

You finally convince your SO to get their own computer so you don't have to take turns for Warcraft or City of Heroes... and you're more excited about their computer than they are. And that you can't wait to set it all up for them with their preferred apps/games and get it good to go...

NOTE: You can have an unlimited amount of partitions within an Extended/Logical partition. But usually only 4 primary.
Also, I just got a new OS today. SkyOS (http://skyos.org/)

What, they're still in alpha but already more stable than Vista?
This reinforces my theory that, while working on Vista, one of the programmers accidentally copypasted a few dozen Wikipedia articles into the code.

Vista is just a development build of Longhorn anyway. Microsoft only released it because their shareholders were becoming impatient for Longhorn to be released.
1. Expected to be released in 2003
2. Shareholders gripe | Vista Beta released to public to spark interest in shareholders in 2006
3. Multiple bugs fixed | Exptected to be released Christmas 2006 | Problems push release to early 2007 (Microsoft forgot to release information to hardware manufacturers)
4. Disregarding hardware, Vista is released in November 2006
The underlying core, Longhorn, is still in development stage (starting to remind me of GNU Hurd: take 10 years to develop something that still comes nowhere near stable, and by the time its out, the improvements in hardware have caused the advantages to become unnoticable)
Worse off, some improvements to Windows 7 were removed due to MS history of Anti-Trust lawsuits. Most are noticeable from the speed differences in builds.
Finally, the new MinWin kernel has around a ~60MB footprint on my computer. It is a Hybrid Kernel (Kernel interacts with software), but it's starting to look more and more monolithic.

DSL is technically superior to Cable, at least, depending on where you live.
Cable
Pros: Usually faster than DSL | Some companies offer cable at or less than DSL. | Comparing to ADSL (not SDSL) Cable has a nearly equal upload/download speeds.
Cons: You are NOT on a dedicated line. This means that you SHARE your internet with your block (not your street block, your cable block. Much larger) | Cable tends to be more expensive. ( I use AT&T, 1.5Mbits for $10 is cheapest plan. Cable in my area is $40 for cheapest, and only plan. In some areas this may be different, but not much.)
DSL
Pro: Usually very cheap, even cheaper than dialup (ancient). You use a dedicated line, so nobody on your block affect your connection.
Con: Cable has a slight edge of speed over DSL in peak conditions. | In some areas, Cable is cheaper than DSL. | ADSL usually has a significantly lower upload to download speeds. SDSL has equal.
Then again, in my area DSL is cheaper in the long run. I can get 8Mb internet for $80 (Some popular website servers restrict any speed higher than 4Mb to decrease load) or 24Mb Cable for $230, or 8Mb for $120 (For comparison reasons).
By the way, Mb is Megabit, not megabyte.

If you can easily afford it, I'd suggest ~45Mbit T3 for about $7,500/month ;). Problem is, I can't afford that. We're paying over $100 for packaged Cable TV and 6Mbit cable internet. Now that DSL has been set up in our area, we're thinking of switching to DSL and DirecTV.

DSL, not a very good price, again, hidden charges on your phone bill. DirecTV, I wouldn't suggest that either. Depending on your setup it can be as much as double the price of cable. Keep in mind in their quoting of channels, they are counting PPV and music channels. Which equate to 90 channels. Now factor in the fact that you absolutely neeeeeed a box on every tv you use it with. 5.00 (last time I checked) for each additional box. Usually it equates to very expensive tv. Which, from experience, you usually can't even watch due to the wind blowing. lol Should I go into the nastiness of Qwest phone service next? lol Comcast is the oooooooonly way to go. Damn, its almost like I work for em.

Like I said, just take a close look at your phone bill to realize your paying a lot more then $10.00 for it. Your paying about 30.
I have Internet only with Skype for phone. My bill comes up to $20 for service (2Mbits). With fees its $22.00 flat (8.5% tax is $21.70, another .30 for service charge).
Also, I have DirecTV, and its very nice to have. Cheaper than cable with more channels, but it does go out during bad weather (BAD weather, not a light mist).

7.10 = Release date of October (10) of 2007 (7)
8.04 = Release date of April (04) of 2008 (8)
Its not actually a system of version numbering based on previous test releases, but on the date on which it is released.

http://www.qwest.com/legal/highspeedinternetsubscriberagreement/ Yeah..... um, no. Sorry, and those "other charges" is exactly what I am talking about.
As for DirecTv well https://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/wizard/buildYourSystem1.jsp The comparible package to standard cable, after their promo is up, is $52.99. Well, your already roughly $10.00 above the price of the average cable providers standard cable package. Which doesn't need a box on every tv. If you want a box on one or two tv's to get in VOD (which isn't available on satellite) you can get it for $1.50 roughly depending on your provider. Lets see the average home has what, 3 tv's? Ok, go ahead, I will let you take the time to look up how much a month it is to have extra boxes on your DirecTv account..... throw those on, how much are we saving over cable? Oh, we aren't...... ouch. By the way, what exactly extra channels are you getting over there with DirecTv? (Hope I could save ya there from going that direction Kopachris)

I still like DirecTV better than Cable. It's not that much more, and I get full HD. Comparatively, HD from my cable company is a lot more than DTV.
Also, I use AT&T, not Qwest. If you have an issue with them, give them a call, its not my issue. Umm, sorry about that bloke.

Sorry to burst your bubble here but:
http://www.usa.att.com/dsl/plans/index.jsp
1 This limited-time offer provides the first 12 months of AT&T DSL Service at $20 per month off the current rate of the AT&T DSL Service Standard Plan (currently $39.95 a month) and Preferred Plan (currently $49.95 a month) for new customers only.
Now in your case, there would not be two bills, you are correct, however 1.5 for $39.99? I would rather pay $42.99 for 4.0Mb service from Comcast. Wether or not thats worth it to you is up to you however. Though when you factor that 3.0Mb service from AT&T is $49.99 and Comcast 4.0Mb service is $42.99........ Yeh, it just doesn't add up.
Edit: What cable company do you have? I would love to blow the HD thing from DirecTv out of the water too! Gimmie the opportunity! I'm begging you!

lol Not being a troll here dude, just proving a point. And successfully I might add. And this isn't google, this is their own websites. And your probably right, there are promos, but promos aren't regular rates.
Edit: Or at least thats not what I was trying to be if thats how I came out. Looking back, I can see how it might look that way, but that is far from what my intention was.

I wish NZ used the system from overseas, over here we only get a limited amount of downloads (6GB for me for $40 a month). We do get unlimited speed though.

Damn, no offense, but that really bites. Kinda hard to have "unlimited speed" when you are limited in how much you can use it. By the way, what kind of connection has unlimited speed?
talsemgeest

They say its unlimited but it's really just adsl with the isp doing nothing to slow you down (until you hit you data cap when they cut you back to dialup speed)

Edit: Almost forgot, say goodbye to the beauty of Video On Demand
We don't watch very many channels anyway, all we really need is fox, CNN Headline News, ESPN, the Discoveries, the Histories, NatGeo, and Nick. Also, we need the boxes for cable, too, and we only have 2 TVs. As for Video On Demand, our main TV is piped through an ATI All-in-wonder Radeon, so our cable signal get cleared up, we get the surround sound, and we can still record whatever we want. I do, however agree with the losing the signal. We had DirecTV at the last place we lived, and it was out half the time. (with the Radeon card that now resides in my Dinosaur computer working just fine)
P.S. Who'd want to watch Dirty Jobs in HD? :p It would be nice to use that HDTV, though.

According to a thread on these forums (somewhere) the development repositiories for Ubuntu 8.10, Intrepid Ibex have appeared. Switching to them will be a case of changing every occurence of "hardy" in your apt sources.list to "intrepid".
