YKYAGW you're excited that 64-bit Jaunty is MUCH more stable on your system than 32-bit Intrepid (And Intrepid was nearly flawless)!

I also find it ironic the 64-bit alpha of Adobe Flash works smoother than the 32-bit final version - and with no crashes.

Hear hear! Though I haven't upgraded to jaunty yet (slow internets this week, my ISP sucks), when I switched to Intrepid I installed the x64 version and was equally pleased.

Unfortunately, yes! That's what exactly will happen.
While it is really harder to make a virus for Linux, it's been long proven that it is not impossible. :(

Though really if it happens I expect then to be more trojans and rootkits, than classic viruses. And those most likely will try to trick user to enter password in masquaraded fields...

The open development model of most Linux software would make it very hard to code any seriously threatening virii for Linux, though. I think the only way for a Linux virus to cause substantial damage on a wide scale would be by coupling it with PEBKAC.

YKYAGW you don't need to do anything to get your machine working after an upgrade - but break things anyways to know how to fix them.

YKYAGW you have built a bash script for a fresh install that combines all your favorite UbuntuForums tutorials, like the Complete Multimedia How-To (I'm in the process of working on it. It'll include sources.list updating, program install/uninstall, settings tweaks, and anything else I can think of. Much better than an aptoncd archive, because it'll do more than just install the programs, and better than a remastersys because it'll stay up-to-date.)

You know you're a geek when...

- You remember the exact pin configuration for soldering in a 8086 processor.

- You remember when the RST-238L was a 'mass storage device.'

- you actually took the time and imagination to come up with a process to duplicate the copy protection procedures used on 720k disks so you could make a bootleg of Police Quest (wow...)

- You have been heard muttering the words "Wolfenstein 3d" and "revolutionary" in the same sentence.

- you remember when the cost of memory 'decreased' to $100 /per MB.

- you can to this day write a program in CPM.

- you've found yourself trying unix commands when things won't function right on your windows box.

- you've been caught muttering cisco router commands in your sleep (guilty!)

- you can to this day pull a copy of Windows 2.0 out of your library. (I should try to sell it on ebay)

- You're searching this forum to see if you can get your hp jornada to run ubuntu because you're tired of CE. (guilty!)

...You rearrange your keyboard keys to not even be close to where they are supposed to be (example: the F1 key is where the decimal on the keypad is, the Q is where the right arrow would be). Only keys in place are Enter, Backspace, Tab, Shift (both), Control, Alt, Space, and the 0 on the keypad.

...Your computer privlages are taken away from at school for configuring every computer you're on. Then use your girlfriends account because she wasn't using it.

...You take a picture of a car, and all you see is a huge glare and say "it's reflective property is too high, where're the options to change it?"

...Have a custom license plate on your car that says "ERR 404"

...You make fun of the computers at work 'cause they are runnin' Windows 95.

...Work computers crash and say "Thats Windows for ya. Need to use Linux, won't crash!"

...Everyone at work complains about the computers being slow and you say "Give it a break! It's only clocked at 133 MHz and 64 MB of RAM!" and they give you the stare that says "wtf you talkin' 'bout?!?!?"

...Put one of your brothers on your mother's laptop, and the other on your computer just so you can get more sleep because you haven't slept in 3 days.

You know you 're a geek when -

You've actually told a person to hold on so you could reboot a NAS.

You've actually conducted the experiments to PROVE that the 3-4-5 rule of networking is more a 'guideline' (that one was the Marine Corps fault!)

You're guilty of building a spark gap based EMP and destroying over 100,000 $ worth of stereo equipment at DefCon 2001. (It was a demonstration, and they refused to listen to our instructions! For my PowerBook, I just plug in the AC adapter and hit the space bar when I wake up. I have it set up with an app called "Time Left", which is set to run a script that quits iTunes and sleeps the computer when it reaches about 15% battery. The "quit iTunes" part actually came from a year ago with early iTunes 7, when I had problems quitting it after waking the computer from sleep with iTunes playing something.
As for my Dinosaur, I have it set in the BIOS to turn on at 6am (when I get up) every morning. The beep of the POST usually beats my alarm by a few seconds.

All of them? O.O I have the Linux Complete Command Reference, and there are 1527 pages. And this was back in the 90's (Granted, not many commands have changed a lot since then, maybe a few bugfixes and added arguments).

It also includes what is basically the manpage for each one, and each command takes up about a page. Taking out the room for the index and table of contents, and a few more pages to cover commands with more arguments that take up multiple pages... let's say about 1,250 commands. Not counting any *added* programs you installed.

Again, I say O.O

Not trying to disagree with you, mind you... just saying that memorizing *all* the terminal commands *is* quite a feat.

YKYAGW you go through the proper channels to get your terminal to work after a crashed session, while surreptitiously monitoring progress on a system console emulator running on another nearby terminal and not letting on that you could have done it yourself in a fraction of the time (don't tell the boss, I'm not supposed to know about that program!)

Ykyagw you make analogies between Earth nations and Star Trek species. :p

USA - The Federation (or more precisely, Earth). The police of the galaxy. Used for comparison.
USSR/Russia - The Romulan Star Empire. We're not really enemies, but we don't like each other and we both have our fingers on the "fire" button, should the other make any sudden movements.
Germany - The Klingon Empire. We used to be enemies, but not anymore. They have a long tradition of war, and there's still a lot of prejudice against them. Oh, and they have a rough-sounding language that actually makes a lot of sense.
Switzerland - The Ferengi Alliance. Not really a threat, and they still seem to think that gold is valuable.
Kazakhstan - Vulcan. First off, they're a desert. Second, they used to be one with the Romulans (USSR/Russia), albeit in a different way than presented in Star Trek. We have good relations with them, and they have a good space program.
Japan - The Cardassian Union. They were our enemies back in the day, allied with the Dominion (Axis, WWII). They were absolutely ruthless when at war, and some of our largest battles were against them. They also have good food.
China - The Borg. They're assimilating everyone. Take advice from Q, don't provoke the Borg! They're massive, and you don't want to mess with them.
Australia - Ocampa. They live underground in a desert. Not much else to say.

Vulcan was particularly hard to match up, and it was hard to figure out a good wording for Japan/Cardassian Union.

You want to build yourself a low powered compile cluster, gain all the optimisation in a fairly short time on a box that you don't need for anything else :p

Of course that doesn't work too great with gentoo, since portage doesn't play fair with that, but it's still a great solution if you want to play around with lfs or something similar :p

btw I at first tried LFS... while it was fun, Gentoo's portage is one really cool thingie.

I don't have time to compile code, I'd rather just do what I need to do right there and now. The whole point in some of us switching to linux is it help get the job done and doesn't sit there waiting for an email from mars like that retarded OS Bill Gates calls "windows".

In this day and age, we don't have time for compiling. I'm not talking down about Gentoo, I just don't have time to compile it to use it. Until make can utilize a quad core to its full potential, I'll stick to ubuntu.

Fair enough...
Though to make things clear... a quad-core can be utilized for compiling and in fact as scragar mentioned a whole cluster of PCs can be used for compiling binaries for a single system.

I have a Quad-Core Phenom and I have pretty much every single application optimized for Phenom's instruction set, and with features I only want them to be compiled with. Also a kernel compiled with modules only for my particular system.
It is a fairly good reason to use Gentoo!
Of course installing new apps takes quite a time (very roughly around ten times longer for a cmatrix to install), but as I don't routinely install and remove apps (well maybe I do, but it still doesn't bug me) so more waiting is ok for me.

Also on side note I pretty much eliminated every audio and OpenGL bug I was having with Ubuntu (Interpid).

Don't forget the slackware uni-sys-rec-CD/DVD, pretty much a command line liveCD without the intention of it being used for anything more simple system repair(it has lynx as it's browser of choice :p)

NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!1!!! NOT AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know your a geek when the first thing you do when you have a computer hardware problem is to give the affected component a nice healthy *SMACK!* before trying anything else. Has worked for me on several occasions. :)
