Installed Gaim, and as an MSN client it all works, but cannot get google talk under jabber to work.
Have tried settings as with Gaim on windows (can we say that word here??!!) and as displayed on google.com but each time i connect i get stream error. Help!!! Other than that, Ubuntu is rockin'.....finally, once gaim is up and ok, that wilkl be windows gone from this machine. and not before time!!
Thought it might be a security thing, but assume not as msn all good??

I found an app called Tapioca at http://tapioca-voip.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Tapioca. Check it out. The only problem that I found was that when I made a call the users machine on the other end did not ring. The same for when they called me.

I just configured Gaim to use Google Talk. Now I wonder if you could install Google Talk itself on Ubuntu?
Or should I use the Google Talk integrated into Gmail instead?

You can install gookle talk under Ubuntu, thanks to wine, but the close button doesn't work, so you have to use the system monitor to end the process when you want to close the window. Using GAIM or the GTalk in GMail is a better idea.

ummm you dont need wine to use your gmail jabber address.
i use gaim and gajim under dapper with out wine anywhere to be seen.
its simple, i put my user name in the username bit, then i put gmail.com in the server bit. then i put under connect server : talk.google.com and 5222 as theport.
done. not hard. and btw gtalk, googletalk or wahteever you call it....is just jabber. (well not JUST jabber, coz jabber rocks)
I say it coz i understand that we humans re subject to idol worshi of one knid or another(even when you think your being elite by saying you dont not),
Being a libran, i just wanna see all idols worshipped equally....lol.

hey mates just as a reminder for the lazy ladds, if u copy and paste the info when setup-ing you gmail account with Gaim, make sure you dont leave any extra spaces in the fields. For instance i am one of those lazy ones and i left a space after gmail.com for the server name. It kept on giving me errors. Any ways i just wanted to give ya a heads up.

Some people reported an authentication failure when connecting to google talk through gaim. According to http://www.soledadpenades.com/2006/09/01/authentication-failure-with-gaim-in-ubuntu-when-trying-to-use-a-googletalk-account/ you have to use googlemail.com instead of gmail.com for the sever.
I had the same problem and I solved it by renaming the server.
Hope this helps

i prefer to use kopete for jabber, because it leaves the chat records on google's servers. I'm pretty sure gaim doesn't...so if i want to go back and re-read a chat and am at another computer, it won't be displayed in my gmail acount. Other than that, i wish google would properly port Google Talk to linux.

Google certainly has benefitted from Linux and the open source movement - the backbone of its company is built on it and Google is the biggest user of Linux in the world, via its massive server farms.
The least Google could do is ensure that all its downloadable apps work with Linux. It would build goodwill and act as a nice little thank you to the community. It would also help set a standard for other companies to release their products for Linux.

Throw this in the "just in case" bin: did you follow Google's directions on setting up GAIM (http://www.google.com/support/talk/bin/answer.py?answer=24073)?

A reason to use GoogleTalk is the in-built support for Orkut. Its widely used here in India.
