catlett: looks like two Dung Beatles to me.
P.S. yes that is the explanation of the artwork by M.C. Escher. :p
honestly Escher was Dutch so Scarabs may be a mis-translation or perhaps Dung Beatles have a similar tendency to roll s***?
EDIT: actually a Scarab is a Dung Beatle:
Scarabaeidae
The family Scarabaeidae consists of over 30,000 species of beetles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beetle) worldwide. The species in this large family are often called scarabs or scarab beetles.
Scarabs are stout-bodied beetles, many with bright metallic colors, measuring between 5-60 mm. They have distinctive, clubbed antennae (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antennae) composed of plates called lamellae (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamellae) that can be compressed into a ball or fanned out like leaves to sense odors. The front legs are broad and adapted for digging.
The C-shaped larvae (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larvae), called grubs, are pale yellow or white. Most adult beetles are nocturnal, although the flower chafers (Cetoniinae (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cetoniinae)) and many leaf chafers (Rutelinae (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Rutelinae&action=edit)) are active during the day. The grubs mostly live underground or under debris, so are not exposed to sunlight. Many Scarabs are scavengers that recycle dung, carrion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrion), or decaying plant material. Others, such as the Japanese Beetle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_Beetle) are devastating agricultural pests.
Some of the well-known beetles from the Scarabaeidae are Japanese Beetles, Dung beetles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dung_beetle), June beetles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_beetle), Rose chafers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rose_chafer), Rhinoceros beetles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhinoceros_beetle), Hercules beetles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hercules_beetle) and Goliath beetles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goliath_beetle).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarabaeidae
Also see this page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarab
A scarab or scarab beetle may refer to:
A beetle which belong to the family Scarabaeidae (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarabaeidae).
A dung beetle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dung_beetle), especially the Scarabaeus sacer worshipped by the ancient Egyptians (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Egypt) (an amulet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amulet) made by that people in the shape of the species is also called a scarab).

catlett: LOL, I forgot about that silly thread. The M.C. Escher use of his artwork: "Scarabs" is meant to be funny (in a symbolic way with humor; Linux Devs hard at work). I would like to see a Linux Distro that had it set as a default wallpaper for the desktop. I totally got your joke. It would be cool on Ubuntu Edgy Eft as a default desktop. I'm sure the Escher family would grant rights(for a price?).
Perhaps the next version after eft could be Ubuntu __________ Scarab...
