I've heard that Beryl has been replaced by Compiz Fusion, which I guess I already have. I'm able to do all the wiggly windows stuff and all that, but what about the ol' flame effects and the rotating cube? I have no idea how to use the cube, but I can still switch desktops by clicking on the double-window thing in the corner.

Install CCSM
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
Goto System->Preferences->Advanced Desktop Effects Settings
There, enable the Desktop Cube, Rotate Cube and Cube Caps plugins.
Also, click on Animations plugin and you can set different effects (Burn, Airplane etc) for window actions there.
