Hello everyone,

I want to set up my Hardy laptop to play 5.1 surround movies and music, my laptop has an internal Conexant HD audio card and I want to buy one of the creative sound blaster 5.1 surround external usb sound cards to use with surround speakers(this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sound-Blaster-X-Fi-Surround-5-1/dp/tech-data/B0019JDDC8/ref=de_a_smtd?ie=UTF8&qid=1216041518&sr=1-2 or this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000KFQTD2). What I want to know is if the cards would be compatible with Ubuntu and also if plugging them in to the laptop would cause it to conflict with the internal sound card. How would I set up the external card or wold it work out of the box? I want to make sure it's possible before making the purchase. Any hep is appreciated.

I think pretty much all usb sound cards work since they use the same alsa usb drivers.

Check the alsa matrix to see which sound cards are supported: http://alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Main
