Sound Cards-Changing order

Could someone help me with my sound card priority order. I am a Noob so will need the exact instructions. I have tried to do it as explained in the Comp Sound thread but I must be missing out somewhere. My cards are listed as follows:-
card 0: Live [SB Live 5.1], device 3: emu10k1 [Multichannel Playback]

Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: M5461 [HDA ULI M5461], device 0: AD198x Analog [AD198x Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: M5461 [HDA ULI M5461], device 1: AD198x Digital [AD198x Digital]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 2: Phone [USB Phone], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]

I cannot record anything even in sound recorder and when I go into alsa gnome mixer I notice that only the USB phone card (external phone for skype) is recognised. I know this because I can control the speaker sliders via the up and down volume buttons on the skype phone!
I do get good quality sound from all internal stuff and internet + video.
I think I need to be able to use my SB Live .
