OK. Basically my little brother's hard drive died. Of course, it never occurred to him that maybe he should backup his files every once and a while. Now, he has a iPod full of music but can't sync it with is newly fixed computer because iTunes will just wipe his iPod clean. I tired using Gtkpod's 'save to file system' feature but is giving a bunch of "Failed to write" errors for a nice chunk of his music. Unfortunately, that is as in depth as the error explanation gets. Any ideas?

Enter the ipod as a filesystem (you may have to enable show hidden files) and copy and paste the ipod_control folder. This will not give the correct filenames for the songs but is much easier than using most programs.
Alternately, try yamipod (http://www.yamipod.com/) instead.

Floola has the ability to copy the files to disk and it works very well, I have used it myself.
You can get a binary from its site (http://www.floola.com/) or a package from getdeb.net (http://www.getdeb.net/app/Floola).
