Hi all,

I'm new to Kubuntu. I know a little about Ubuntu so please, take it easy on me :)

I just did a fresh install of Kubuntu 8.04 in my old pc. I did not install any updates or any other programs. Just popped in the CD installer and installed it.

My problem is I can't get the resolution correctly. The options that I can only pick are 800x600 and 640x480.

Here are the things that I've done:

1) I've installed the restricted drivers for Nvidia (the one that pops up). After doing so, the resolution options got more limited. Now, 800x600 is gone. I can only pick 640x480.

2) I've downloaded from "nvidia-settings" to have GUI access to the x server (is that right?) and I tried to change the resolution from there. It only gave me: Auto, 640x480, 320x??? resolutions.

3) I tried to look at my xorg.conf but I think I'll just not mess with that because I don't know how/where to start editing it. However, I think I can see that my monitor and video card are not detected in here (not sure though).

4) I also tried to run the "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" but surprisingly It didn't give me the option to change the resolution. It was just giving me options for my keyboard layout and other stuff. No video releated questions except the 1st one. Something about the kernel and the video.

How can I make my resolutions ok with Kubuntu? Could someone please help me with a step by step guide?

Here are my specs:

Athlon XP 2000+
512mb ddr 333mhz
40gb IDE hdd
Nvidia Geforce 4200ti 128mb 4x AGP
GA-7VT600 mobo
Dell/Trinitron UltraScan P780 17" (max resolution is above 800x600)

Thank you so much.

BTW, Sorry for my poor English.
