When I resume from sleep mode I see a screen with a text cursor. I can change virtual terminals but not type into them. If I change to the terminal with X on it the screen goes blank and I can't do anything after that. I just installed kubuntu yesterday and haven't made many changes besides setting up the hardware. Thanks.

What video & network card does the computer have?
There are a lot of threads on resume problems (http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=ubuntu+resume).
Even though this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=764970&highlight=resume&page=2) isn't specifically about you laptop there are links there that might help you.
Actually the above link isn't that good except for pointing to the laptop testing page. I would recommend the laptop testing page and the community documents (see my sig)

The video card is an intel GM965. The network card is an interl 62566MM. I've tried some fixes for similar models with the same graphics card like adding "acpi_sleep=s3_bios" to the kernel options but so far nothing has worked.

My problem is sort of similar to the one desribed in the last half of the third post in this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=770147. But their solution is to remove a kernel module that isn't loaded on my system and they are able to type when they switch virtual terminals. I can switch terminals but can't type anything into them.
