How do I get my music player to minimize, yet show album art and stay in the bottom left corner like this?

um what music player do you use? It may not be possible depending on what application you are using. btw the example you cited is for OS X (rather than ubuntu or any other linux distro), so again, it may not be possible to achieve that exact effect.

But that's iTunes. Maybe you want the Apple Users forum?
If not, what player are you using? I know Amarok has a feature where the album cover and track status popup when you float your cursor over the tray icon

I'm extremely new to the linux scene, so i'm absolutely clueless. the only thing I've done so far is installed Ubuntu, and that's pretty much it. I'm using rhythymbox, but i'd prefer something a little more appealing.
And completely off topic, but how would I install a game i've downloaded?

try out a few different music players. I personally like amarok, many others use XMMS (similar to old winamp).
There is more than one way to install software in linux. This website should help you get started with the most typical ways to install software:

Check out the other tutorials he has on that site, there is a lot of useful information there.
enjoy!

You can probably do it with a widget or screenlet of some sort.
I did a quick check on gnome-look.org and found this one which looks like it might be something similar to what you want.

It's for the Amarok media player, but if you check around you can probably find one similar for your music player as well.
Hopefully this helps you. If you do find one for your music player, please let us know, as others probably would be interested as well.
