Ihave nearly finished installing ubuntu 5.10 and now get :~$ at the comand promt what do i have to do

well, 5.10 is a very old release... current one is 8.04

and you get the command prompt because you installed the server edition.

Why oh why did you install an ubuntu from 2005?

Try to type startx
