Okay, so I recently hopped back on Linux after a hiatus, and since then I have gotten an ATI X850 Pro, replacing my dead 6600GT.

So here's what's going on..

I installed a fresh copy of 8.04, then went through the updated manager, and THEN installed the restricted drivers for the ATI card.

Prior to the restricted drivers, my monitor (Viewsonic P810) was recognized, and most of the modes were available, but not all since there was no driver for the ATI card.

After the install, compiz worked perfectly, but now the monitor was not identified, and I could only use a refresh rate of 60hz.. killer. At that point I brought up the gui that lets you identify the monitor and set the refresh rate and resolution (can't recall the command..). After restarting, I get a white screen when I log on.

help anybody?

Login using a recovery mode and disable desktop effects in your system settings. You'll at least be able to function. Got the same problem, the culprit is compiz effects not working right with ATI drivers.

Figures as much. I guess for now I'll just use the default drivers so I can mess with the compiz effects. I hope that they resolve this issue soon!
