Shouldn't most Ubuntu and Kubuntu gaming questions work the same whether you're running kde or gnome? I guess using arts or ESD might be different sometimes or kde and gnome specific games might be a little different(you can still install them anyway). I mean, gnometris and kdetris(or whatever) do not really need their own separate forums.

Seems to me like a divide which doesn't need to be made. Ubuntu and Kubuntu gaming are pretty much the same

I agree. I also think dividing the other sections is somewhat useless as well because a lot of the questions in Desktop support are desktop neutral and we could handle seeing both KDE and GNOME. Or, there should be a third forum for general stuff that isn't distro related. Right now Ubuntu-users won't get help from Kubuntu-users and vice versa and some questions may be left unanswered.

Yes. I agree too.

I disagree for three reasons:

1. Three of you noticed this section, which one could assume that many others have as well :)

2. Some newbies unfamiliar with Ubuntu/Kubuntu might post here, who otherwise might not post a question at all. When they figure out some of the ins and outs, they will probably move on to the "normal" gaming sections. Of course, by then, there will be fresh newbies with similar thoughts and questions

3. KDE specific games, such as Boson. This one has dependency problems, for example.

While segregating questions into more specific topic is good, however, I feel that our community has not reach a size that need such fine distinction.

I have to confess that as a Kubuntu user, very when possible I post question in the Ubuntu forum because there are more people reading it there, unless it is KDE specific.

In a way, i find the segregation awkward. For example, I run 64 bit Kubuntu (the minority of the minority), and right now I have some problem running Enemy Territory. I'm not really sure if I should post my question on Kubuntu gaming forum or Kubuntu AMD64 forum, as I am not sure if it is AMD64 specific problem. And I am not even sure if my problem is Kubuntu specific and similar stuffs have been covered in the Ubuntu gaming forum, or even Ubuntu AMD64 forum. :p

Personally, I like the seperate forum. Especially considering the animosity with which most Gnome users seem to have toward KDE, it would make me very uncomfortable to have only one forum.

Of course I never did get the whole "mines bigger than yours" mentality either. To me the computer is a tool, and I use whatever tool does the job, whether it's windows, linux or mac.

For gaming, I don't think it makes any sense. 99% of gaming issues are going to be desktop neutral. This just divides an already small group. There should just be a Ubuntu/Kubuntu Gaming Forum.

Hmmm... Whenever I play a game, I switch to xfce. And I agree that most games are WM-independent (Boson being the odd one out). A unified gaming forum might better.

That being said, I think that having a separate Kubuntu desktop forum is still a good idea. The Gnome and KDE desktops differ very much and the noise-to-signal ratio on the old desktop forum was not very good for KDE users.

BTW: should this discussion not be in the Site Discussion forum?

I think it's a good idea for the forums to be split between gnome and kde - it just makes things clearer, espcially for beginners. Generally, I post in here because I just happen to use KDE - I could equally post in the Ubuntu section. And, in fact, I check both sections out regularly, so it doesn't really matter to me.

Gaming is one area where most issues are not desktop-specific, but some things are - in the Ubuntu forums, a sudden surge of people saying "I can't see my media in Konqueror!" doesn't mean a thing to Gnome users, for example.
