Hi Everyone,
I am a big fan of cinelerra and use it a whole bunch but the one thing that it doesn't do is special effects like 3d animations, laser beams, fires, and stuff like that. I know that their is visionlab for windows which is really nice but I would like something for ubuntu.
If anybody has any suggestions please post them.
Thanks,

Its only in its alpha stages of development, but Jahshaka looks to be able to do the things your after, as far as I can tell.
you can have a look here http://jahshaka.org/
But as its alpha, it probably isnt suitable for desktop use unless your a developer.
As it stands I think for things like this, the open source world has very few (if any) applications that will do the things your looking to do :(
I hope somebody who knows a bit more than me can step up and prove me wrong!

Thanks for your reply C!V!NT,
I looked at jashaka and it seemed good until i downloaded it and it tried to install an rpm which of course doesn't work. They are also creating a completely new version which means that it will be a long time until they have released a stable version.
Thanks to everyone who has read this post even if you didn't reply.

Hi Everyone,
Thanks to everyone again for responding. For anyone out there who is searching the forums for something like this I will share my opinions of all of the different programs.
Just so you know I choose BLENDER!!!! YEAH!!!!!
For clarification by special effects means things like lightsabers, bullets, and explosions not video and audio transitions like fading.

Kino is a video editing prgrom and not for special effects.
LiVES is also video editing its special effects are audio and video things like fading and transitions.
KDEnlive is the same as the first two.
I did not look at The Open Movie Editor.
PiTiVi is video editing only.
Blender is a 3D modeling program which supports animation and has many plugins for things like lightsabers and stuff of the sort if you can find them. This is what I choose.
AVIDemux is video editing.
